The crack of a bat, the roar of the crowd, Vendors calling out beeeer heeeere. This was the scene on west mound street on Sunday night. The Belhorns had traveled to see the second to last game in the old Cooper Stadium. After 76 years of baseball, the lights will be turned off and we will have reached the end of an era. The Clippers are not going away just moving 3 miles or a 6 minute drive from their old diggs.
It was a great night at the game filled with all the things that make baseball in Columbus great. The Clippers won and after the fireworks we ran the bases, played catch in the outfield and even managed to get a few autographs. Bailey & CJ, Melissa and I standing there in the outfield of one of the oldest ballparks in the country.
Tonight we have decided to attend the last game at the Coop. Next year we hope to be in the stands for the first game in the new Huntington Park. Baseball in Columbus lives on.
Ballpark Digest describes Cooper Stadium
Cooper Stadium, Columbus, Ohio
Yes, it's old, and there's a lot of nostalgia surrounding the longtime home of the Columbus Clippers (and before that the Columbus Jets). But with the relatively limited facilities at Cooper, a new downtown ballpark is now inevitable, and we don't see a use for Cooper Stadium once the Clippers move.
Chances that Cooper Stadium will meet the wrecking ball within five years: 92%
